7: Radicals to Classify KanjiA radical is a basic component of a kanji character used to classify and organize kanji systematically. Traditional kanji dictionaries used by native speakers in Japan arrange characters according to their radical and the number of strokes in the character. Each radical has a conventional name, often called a “nickname.” A kanji may consist of a radical by itself or a radical combined with additional components. For example, the kanji for man, 男(おとこ), is composed of the radical 田(た) meaning rice field and the character 力(ちから) meaning power or strength. When learning kanji, it can be helpful to create a simple story that connects these parts. For instance: A person who uses strength (力) to work in rice fields (田) is a man (男). Mnemonic stories like this can make kanji easier to remember by linking form and meaning in a memorable way.
